Melanie is a development professional who began her fundraising career working with a Consultant in the U.S.  Following her return to the U.K. in 1995, she began working with eminent organisations including the Royal Academy of Arts and the Natural History Museum.

Melanie’s skills are grounded in developing long-term and sustainable charitable giving programmes.  At the Royal Academy of Arts, she successfully established a systematic and professional approach to relationship development, securing £1m in major gifts towards a range of projects, and £3m from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards a major capital appeal.  With the Director of Development, she created an innovative new income stream from individuals in support of the Academy’s exhibition programme, securing £100,000 in its first year.

She then moved to the Natural History Museum, taking responsibility for developing its Charitable Giving Programmes, and raised almost £4m in her first two years towards key capital and revenue projects.  In addition to ongoing income streams, Melanie has significant experience working on major capital appeals, the largest and most prestigious of which was the Natural History Museum’s new £65m appeal to build the Darwin Centre. Working closely with the Museum’s Director and the Head of Development, she established, managed and coached a new Campaign Board in the cultivation and solicitation of gifts and secured £10m towards the campaign.

In October 2004, Melanie joined Andrew Craven to form Craven&Stoutzker, providing additional expertise for clients wishing to maximise the income they raise from individuals and grant giving trusts and foundations.

I have been working with Craven&Stoutzker since October 2005, when I relocated from the US to London to join the National Museums of Science and Industry (NMSI) in the newly created position of Head of Development.  Having worked with many consultants, I find Melanie and Andrew a refreshing change from the hands-off/at arms length approach I have often experienced.  Their clear and effective methods of fundraising and working with clients are both supportive and motivating to me and my colleagues.  An added bonus is their wonderful sense of humour as they help me navigate a new English language!
